PatientsWhat is a Holter Monitor:
A holter monitor is a small recording device that enables continuous monitoring of your heart's activities for a specified period of time. The test is usually conducted over a twenty four hour period but maybe as short as twelve hours or up to several days.During the period of monitoring it is important to note that the monitor must not be exposed to moisture therefore you must not shower or bathe for the duration of the test. It is recommended that prior to having your monitor attached that you either shower or bath.
When attending the center where the monitor is to be attached female patients should wear clothing that will allow the staff access to their chest to attach heart monitoring electrodes, male patients should wear either a button through shirt or loose fitting t-shirt. Once attached the monitor can either be worn attached to a lanyard worn around the neck or on a belt.
Holter Monitor Diary
While you are being monitored by a Holter monitor, it is important to
keep an accurate diary of your activities and symptoms during the test. If you feel symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations or dizziness immediately press the event button on the recorder, then note in your diary the time of the day that the event occurred and what you were doing. Your diary notes will be compared to the changes in your ECG recorded by the Holter monitor.
Please remember that your doctor needs a complete picture of your
activities and any symptoms that may occur. If in doubt write it down.
